It is estimated that by 2050, between 1.7 and 2.4 billion people will face water scarcity. In October 2024, in Valencia, 224 lives were lost due to water excess.
Water does not understand our need for survival. The same water that gives us life flowed relentlessly with its wild and natural force, forever impacting the history of thousands of families. The mud has created a new layer in the individual and collective memory of our region. Photographs and personal heritage – those silent witnesses of time – have been cover in mud with dense suffering. Symbolically, only water helps us unveil the trace left by this devastating event.
However, that imprint can no longer be erased, and the memories of these families have been forever redefined. The scars remaining on their images tell a new story that also needs to be told.
This project aims to give visibility to the families in Valencia affected by the DANA. Through their photographic archive, their voices and testimonies, we try to understand the physical and emotional trace that the water has left on their lives.
